Triangulation is how you win the opposition when the most direct path to the confrontation actually loses it — a short detour that costs no ground in the end but flips whose move it is at the critical moment. It's a purely mechanical trick, and once you've seen it once, it's hard to miss the next time it's available.

The problem it solves

Sometimes the shortest route for your king to a key confrontation square arrives with exactly the wrong parity — you get there in, say, three moves, and so does the opponent's king, which means it ends up being your move right when you least want it to be. Marching straight there in the fewest possible moves actually throws away the position.

The detour: a genuine triangle

The fix is to take a triangular route to the same destination — three squares forming an L or a triangle shape rather than the direct diagonal or straight line — arriving at the exact same square one move later than necessary. If the defending king has fewer available 'spare' squares to shuffle between while you do this, it eventually runs out of options and has to commit to a square first.

Why the defender usually can't just copy the trick

This only works because the defending king is typically restricted to fewer safe waiting squares than the attacking king — often just two, sometimes because of the board's edge, sometimes because of its own pawns.
