Key Squares
A key square is a specific square that, once the attacking king reaches it, guarantees the pawn behind it queens no matter what the defending king tries afterward. Knowing a position's key squares in advance turns a long, careful calculation into a single fact you can check at a glance: is my king on one of them, or can it get to one, or not.
Where they are, depending on how far the pawn has advanced
For a pawn that hasn't yet crossed the midpoint of the board, the key squares are the three squares two ranks in front of the pawn — one directly ahead, and one on each adjacent file. Once the pawn has advanced past the midpoint, the key squares move closer, dropping to just one rank in front of the pawn instead of two. The squares shift as the position changes, which is why it's worth re-checking them rather than memorizing one fixed pattern.

Why this single fact replaces a whole calculation
Without key squares, evaluating a king and pawn endgame means calculating out a specific line, move by move, to see whether the pawn actually queens. With key squares, the calculation collapses into a yes-or-no question you can answer once: has the attacking king reached one of the three relevant squares, with the right side to move? If so, the win is guaranteed regardless of how cleverly the defender plays afterward.
Reaching a key square is itself often an opposition problem
Knowing where the key squares are is only half the job — actually getting there sometimes requires winning the opposition, or triangulating if the direct route arrives with the wrong side to move.
Rook pawns are the exception: no key squares at all
A pawn on the a-file or h-file has no key squares whatsoever, because there's no room on the edge of the board for the usual three-square pattern to exist — one of the three squares would fall off the board entirely. This is exactly why rook pawn endgames are so much more often drawn than central or knight pawn endgames with an otherwise identical structure.

In practice, the most useful moment to check key squares is well before the position actually simplifies down to just kings and one pawn — while there are still other pieces on the board, it's worth asking whether trading down leads to a king and pawn endgame where your own king can reach a key square, since that answer alone can determine whether simplifying is a good idea at all.
Worth memorizing as shapes, not just rules
Rather than re-deriving the two-ranks-ahead or one-rank-ahead pattern from scratch every time, it's worth actually visualizing the three key squares on a real board for a few sample pawn positions until the shape becomes automatic — the same way you'd recognize the rule of the square without re-drawing it. That familiarity is what makes the fact usable at the board under time pressure, rather than just known in the abstract.
