A trapped piece has no square it can move to without being captured, even though nothing is attacking it yet at this exact moment. The danger is already there before the final blow arrives — it's a standing condition of the position, not a single move, and recognizing it early is worth far more than noticing it only once the attack finally lands.

Why 'not currently attacked' doesn't mean 'safe'

It's easy to check whether a piece is attacked right now and stop there, but a trapped piece can sit completely unmolested for several moves while its owner simply hasn't gotten around to attacking it yet. The real question isn't "is this piece under attack" — it's "if it were attacked, would it have anywhere to go." A piece that fails that second question is already in serious danger, whether or not anyone is threatening it this particular move.

Why the rim of the board is where this happens most

Pieces on the edge or corner of the board simply have fewer squares to begin with — a knight in the center can reach up to eight squares, while a knight in the corner can reach only two. Fewer available squares means fewer squares an opponent needs to cover before the piece is fully trapped, which is exactly why the old advice about knights on the rim being poorly placed has a genuinely tactical reason behind it, not just a positional one.

Building a trap over several moves

Trapping a piece rarely happens in one move. It's usually a slow process: identify a piece with limited mobility, count how many squares it could still escape to, and methodically bring pieces of your own to cover each one — the same way the position above required four separate pieces and pawns each doing their own small part before the knight had nowhere left to go. The piece being trapped often doesn't even move during this process; the trap tightens entirely through what the opponent does elsewhere on the board.

The defensive side of this is a habit worth building into every move you make with a piece near the edge of the board: before committing a knight or bishop to a square, count how many of its escape squares are already under some enemy influence, not just whether the destination square itself is currently safe. A piece that looks fine the moment it lands can quietly lose its options over the following two or three moves without ever being directly threatened until it's too late to matter.

Once a piece is confirmed trapped with no escape left, don't assume the story ends with a quiet capture — check for a desperado first. A piece that can't save itself might still take something down with it before it goes.
