Remove the Defender

Removing the defender is the plainest version of every tactic on this page: a piece is guarding something, so you capture the guard, in a completely ordinary trade, and then take what it was guarding. There's no check, no sacrifice, no forcing sequence — just a direct exchange that happens to leave a second piece undefended once the dust settles.

Why this doesn't need a forcing move

Deflection and decoy both rely on giving the opponent a threat they can't decline. Removing the defender doesn't require that at all — if the trade itself is fair or good on its own terms, you don't need to force anything, because the opponent has no reason to refuse a reasonable exchange. The tactic works quietly, hiding inside a move that looks like normal simplification rather than a combination.

The trap most players fall into when recapturing

The critical detail, and the one that's easy to miss from the defending side, is that a recapture doesn't automatically restore what was lost. A bishop and a knight cover completely different squares even when they trade on the exact same square — one moves diagonally, the other jumps. In the example above, Black's natural recapture looks like it fixes the problem, but the new piece sitting where the old defender used to be simply doesn't reach the square that actually needed guarding. The defense wasn't restored; it only looked restored.

Checking whether a trade is really 'removing the defender'

Before trading off a piece specifically to remove a guard, verify two things: that the trade itself doesn't lose material on its own (it should be fair or better), and that whatever recaptures — if anything does — genuinely fails to cover the square you're really after. A knight recapturing a knight, or a rook recapturing a rook, often DOES keep covering the same lines, since same-type pieces move the same way; the technique is strongest specifically when the recapturing piece is a different type from the one that was removed.

Why this is worth separating from overloading

Overloading is about a piece with two jobs it can't finish; this tactic doesn't require the defender to have two jobs at all — it can be guarding exactly one thing, competently, and still lose that job the moment it's traded off the board and replaced with something that moves differently. The two ideas often show up together in the same position, but only overloading depends on the defender being stretched thin.

A cheaper version: removing the defender's usefulness rather than the defender itself

Sometimes you don't even need to trade the guarding piece off the board — you only need to make it unwilling to recapture. A defender that would technically still be able to recapture, but only by walking into a pin, a fork, or a bigger loss elsewhere, has effectively been removed without a single piece changing hands. Before assuming a target is safely guarded, it's worth asking not just "can this piece recapture" but "can it afford to," since a defender that's materially present but tactically unwilling to do its job is just as good a target as one that's been physically traded away.
