Missing either branch is what sinks a breakthrough sacrifice in practice — it's not enough for one line to work, since the defender always gets to pick whichever response is actually worse for you.

A breakthrough is an active decision — you choose to sacrifice a pawn on your own initiative because the resulting math favors you. Zugzwang is passive from the attacker's point of view: you simply wait for a position where the opponent has no good move to make. The two ideas frequently show up in the same king-and-pawn endgame, sometimes in the same combination, but they're solved with different questions: a breakthrough asks "does this sacrifice win the race," while zugzwang asks "does the opponent have any move that doesn't lose ground."
Practicing the calculation without a board in front of you
Because a breakthrough is pure counting rather than pattern recognition, it's one of the few tactics that's genuinely practical to calculate blindfolded, away from a board — count ranks to the queening square for each candidate pawn, count king moves for each candidate defender, and compare.
