A fork is any single move that attacks two or more enemy targets at once, forcing the opponent to lose at least one of them because there is no move that defends both. It is the simplest tactical idea in chess to explain and, for that exact reason, the first one every improving player should train specifically — the majority of decisive tactics in club-level games trace back to a fork, a pin, or a combination of the two.

Why the knight is the classic forking piece

Any piece can fork, but knights are famous for it because of how a knight attacks: its movement pattern lets it hit squares that look completely unrelated to a human eye, which makes knight forks the hardest tactic for an inexperienced player to spot in advance. A rook fork or bishop fork usually threatens two pieces sitting on the same rank, file, or diagonal — something visually obvious once you're looking for it. The royal fork: check plus material

The most valuable version of a fork combines a check with an attack on another piece, because a check forces an immediate response — the opponent has no time to defend the second target, since dealing with check is mandatory. In the position above, the knight jump to c7 both checks the king and attacks the rook on a8; because Black must respond to the check first, the rook is lost with no way to save it. This 'royal fork' pattern — hit the king and something valuable in the same move — is worth specifically training your eye to look for, because it removes the opponent's ability to simply move the more valuable piece to safety.

How to find forks in your own games

Rather than scanning the whole board hoping to notice a pattern, work backward from the opponent's most valuable, least-defended pieces. Ask: which of my pieces could reach a square that attacks two of those targets simultaneously? For knights specifically, it helps to mentally mark every square a knight would need to stand on to fork the enemy king with something else, then check whether any of your knights can reach one of those squares in one or two moves, with tempo, before the opponent notices and moves a piece away.

Defending against forks

Because knight forks in particular are hard to see coming, defense is mostly preventive rather than reactive. Before moving a piece, check whether it lands on a square reachable by an enemy knight in one move, and whether a second valuable piece of yours also sits on a knight's-move from that same square — if so, you may be walking into a fork even if the position looks calm.
