Pawn Chains

A pawn chain is a run of pawns on a diagonal, each one defending the pawn immediately in front of it. Chains form naturally whenever central pawns get locked against each other rather than traded off, and they show up constantly in structures where one side pushes a central pawn forward and the opponent doesn't capture it — the French Defense and King's Indian Defense both produce textbook examples of this on a regular basis. The chain itself isn't good or bad; what matters is which side it favors, and that's decided entirely by where the chain's base sits and who can attack it first.

The base is the only pawn that matters

Every pawn in the chain except the very last one is defended by the pawn behind it.
